SPD and Union propose stricter rules to prevent overpriced tickets for sports and music events

SPD and Union aim to protect sports and music fans from overpriced tickets for events such as sports matches and concerts. According to Johannes Fechner, a legal expert for the SPD, “Sports and music fans can no longer be cheated.” He calls for transparency rules to be tightened on the secondary ticket market, saying that it must be clear who the seller is, what the original ticket price was and whether the seller is acting commercially or privately. He also wants platforms to take more responsibility for their content, provide a complaint management system and remove reported violations immediately. Fechner also calls for the resale market to be more closely examined, especially in relation to dynamic pricing, which often leads to “exorbitant prices.” He says that cities that own event locations should exclude dynamic pricing in their contracts with lessees. The CDU’s legal policy expert, Günter Krings, agrees that the existing abuse by anonymous, commercially operating providers who resell tickets at extremely high prices is a serious problem for both consumers and event organizers. He calls for more transparency and clear information obligations for online ticket exchanges, but does not want to completely ban the secondary ticket market.
