SPD and Union Play Politics with Parliamentary Control Committee

German Politician Casts Doubt on Union’s Refusal to Nominate Left-Wing Leader for Parliamentary Oversight Committee

In a surprising turn of events, SPD Bundestag member and interior expert Lars Castellucci has spoken out in favor of nominating Heidi Reichinnek, the leader of the Left faction in the German parliament, to the Parliamentary Control Committee (PKGr). This move comes in stark contrast to the stance of the Union faction, which has thus far refused to support her candidacy.

Castellucci, a member of the Bundestag’s interior committee, emphasized the importance of ensuring the parliamentary oversight of security agencies, stating that it is crucial to involve democratic opposition factions in this process. He also highlighted the fact that there are no grounds to deny Reichinnek’s candidacy, unlike the case of AfD candidates who do not stand on the foundation of the German constitution.

Meanwhile, Reichinnek herself has called on the Union to reconsider its stance and vote for her on Thursday. She accused the Union of resorting to “fact-less and substance-less attacks” and urged them to stop using the parliamentary oversight committee for personal and party political power plays.

Reichinnek’s nomination was put forward by her party due to her parliamentary experience and she believes that her cross-party recognition for her efforts in defense of democracy, as well as the public’s trust in her, make her a suitable candidate for the PKGr. The PKGr is a central committee for Germany’s security architecture and Reichinnek emphasized the need for the democratic opposition to be involved in the control of intelligence agencies.

In a statement, Reichinnek said that no one has yet provided a reason as to why she is not qualified for the position and that she expects the Union to put an end to its “personal and party political power play” and allow the Left faction to take its rightful place in the PKGr. If the Union fails to do so, she warned that it could raise questions about the future of their cooperation, particularly in regards to the election of constitutional court judges and the reform of the debt brake.
