Union’s Spahn reaffirms CDU’s decision to not cooperate with the Left Party in the Chancellor election
Union-Fraktionschef Jens Spahn (CDU) has reaffirmed the CDU’s decision to not cooperate with the Left Party in the Chancellor election. After the cooperation with the Left Party on the shortening of the time limit for the second round of the Chancellor election, Spahn told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” (Thursday edition) that the decision made by the party congress to not cooperate with the Left Party still stands. He stated that the request for a second election was “a businesslike motion on the agenda” and that it “does not violate the non-cooperation decision or lift it. The coalition has its own majority, with which we will govern stably and reliably.”
After Friedrich Merz, the CDU chairman, failed in the first round of the Chancellor election in the Bundestag, the Union and SPD, together with the Left Party and the Greens, submitted an application for an immediate second round of the election. For the necessary shortening of the time limit, a two-thirds majority was required. Therefore, Kanzleramtschef Thorsten Frei (CDU) suggested a debate on the non-cooperation decision on Wednesday.
