Jens Spahn, a leading figure within the CDU parliamentary group, has firmly rejected any possibility of cooperation with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, dismissing recent speculation of a potential rapprochement.
In an interview with “Focus” magazine, Spahn addressed claims of possible collaboration, emphasizing a history of direct confrontation with the AfD’s rhetoric. He stated he had engaged with AfD arguments and accusations even before some of his current critics entered the Bundestag. He specifically recalled experiencing personal attacks during the COVID-19 pandemic, alleging that he would be among the first targeted should the AfD gain significant political influence.
Responding to suggestions originating from within the SPD that he might be open to a coalition with the AfD, Spahn expressed bewilderment, characterizing the criticisms as unfounded rumours perpetuated without evidence. He questioned the source of such claims, stating he did not understand the basis for the speculation.
