Spahn Pushes for Nationwide Kohl Streets

The planned renaming of Hofjägerallee in Berlin to Helmut Kohl Allee has garnered support from CDU parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn, who has further suggested that every city in Germany should consider commemorating the former chancellor with a street bearing his name.

Spahn, speaking to Bavarian media outlets, emphasized Kohl’s significant role in post-war German history, highlighting his leadership during the reunification period. He noted the symbolic importance of a street in central Berlin being dedicated to Kohl, expressing surprise that it had taken 35 years for such an honor to be bestowed.

The politician also addressed the ongoing construction of the National Unity Monument in front of the Berlin Palace, now slated for completion in 2029. While expressing a prior commitment to finishing the project within the current legislative term, Spahn criticized the protracted construction timelines that have become commonplace for significant national infrastructure and memorial projects.

Drawing a contrast with the rapid industrial response observed during a recent visit to Ukraine, where factories were rapidly constructed due to pressing needs, Spahn underscored Germany’s economic capabilities, ranking as the third largest economy globally. He argued for a renewed focus on accelerating the pace of execution for public works and reforms, asserting that Germany possesses the capacity to achieve significantly greater efficiency and speed in project delivery.
