The CDU faction leader, Jens Spahn, hailing from North Rhine-Westphalia, expressed considerable satisfaction with the results of the recent local elections. Spahn characterized the CDU’s victory in Dortmund as a historic achievement in an interview with the “Rheinische Post.
The party also secured strong results in Essen and Düsseldorf, meaning that three out of the five largest cities in North Rhine-Westphalia are now governed by CDU mayors. This success is further bolstered by victories in Aachen, Bonn, Leverkusen, Bielefeld and Hagen, alongside wins in the county administrator positions in Herford and Lippe.
Spahn noted that the scale of this electoral success is comparable to the victories achieved in 1999, describing the outcome as “a great evening” for the CDU.
