The ongoing debate surrounding the postponed election of judges for the Federal Constitutional Court has seen sharp exchanges between German political figures. SPD General Secretary Tim Klüssendorf has publicly criticized CDU parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn, alleging a lack of leadership within the coalition government. In an interview with “T-Online” Klüssendorf stated that the inability of the coalition partner’s parliamentary group leader to secure majorities or forge compromises creates pressure within his own party.
Klüssendorf also addressed the state of the “black-red” coalition – a reference to the alliance between the Social Democrats (SPD) and Christian Democrats (CDU). He acknowledged that the recent events have damaged the trust between the partners, noting this is not an isolated incident where jointly made decisions have subsequently faced scrutiny.
Specifically addressing comments made by Christine Brosius-Gersdorf following her appearance on the “Markus Lanz” television program, Klüssendorf defended her position. He argued that given the public criticism she has endured, it was appropriate for her to clarify her stance. He asserted that numerous false statements regarding Brosius-Gersdorf’s views had been circulated, a situation he attributed, at least in part, to the CDU. He emphasized that individuals subjected to such intense public attacks should not be expected to passively accept the situation.
Calls from within the CDU to replace the SPD’s candidate for the Federal Constitutional Court were resoundingly rejected. Klüssendorf unequivocally affirmed the SPD’s full and unwavering support for Brosius-Gersdorf, describing her as a highly respected constitutional law professor eminently qualified for the position.
Regarding comments made by Brosius-Gersdorf on “Lanz” where she suggested she would withdraw her candidacy should it trigger a government crisis or harm the court, Klüssendorf dismissed the remarks as a retraction. He asserted that she intended to emphasize her identity as a scholar rather than a political figure, highlighting her ability to consider perspectives beyond the political sphere as a key attribute. He firmly denied any suggestion of an exit strategy on her part.
