South Korea's Military Intervenes in a Constitutional Crisis

South Korean authorities failed in their attempt to arrest the suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol.

According to a report by the South Korean news agency Yonhap, citing the anti-corruption agency, a military unit initially blocked the investigators from advancing on the presidential office grounds.

Later, the president’s security service also prevented the officials from proceeding. Yoon had previously ignored three summonses from the prosecutors. The authorities now plan to consider further steps, it was said.

The investigators accuse Yoon of instigating a rebellion and abusing his power, after he declared a state of emergency on December 3 and ordered troops to the National Assembly. The arrest warrant against him was requested due to incitement and abuse of power – the president’s immunity from prosecution does not apply in cases of incitement or treason.
