A court in Düsseldorf has sentenced the perpetrator of the Solingen attack to life imprisonment. The Higher Regional Court found him guilty on Wednesday, among other charges, of triple murder. The court also determined the severity of the crime warranted a subsequent indefinite preventative detention order.
The verdict aligns with the demands of the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office. While the defence also requested a life sentence, they had opposed the request for preventative detention.
The attack occurred on the evening of August 23, 2024, during a city festival. The assailant repeatedly and deliberately stabbed visitors, targeting the neck and upper body. Three people died and ten others sustained injuries, some of them severe. The Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack the following day, marking the first such claim by the group in Germany since the attack on the Berlin Breitscheidplatz Christmas market in 2016.
