German Defense Minister’s Proposal for Military Upgrade Met with Criticism and Support
In a recent interview, Christian Social Union (CSU) leader Markus Söder called for the acquisition of thousands of drones, new missile systems and a “Iron Dome” with 2,000 intercept missiles to protect against potential attacks. Söder emphasized the need for a shield with precision weapons, stating that Germany requires a “protection shield with precision weapons.”
The CSU chief proposed a modern drone army with 100,000 drones, an air defense system similar to the “Iron Dome” with 2,000 intercept missiles and cooperation with Ukraine and Israel to utilize their expertise. Additionally, Söder suggested the Bundeswehr needs 300 new battle tanks, 500 infantry fighting vehicles, at least 35 extra Eurofighter jets and 2,000 Patriot and 1,000 Taurus systems for Germany’s defense.
Söder also emphasized the importance of having Germany’s own military satellites, stating that being “blind” in the digital battlefield would hinder the country’s ability to defend itself. The CSU leader argued that the development of satellite technology is crucial for the Bundeswehr’s modernization.
Development Director of the German-Ukrainian drone manufacturer, United Unmanned Systems, Julian Kelterborn, pointed out that the use of drones has become a standard in modern warfare, particularly in Russia, China, Iran and North Korea, which pose a military threat to the West. He criticized Germany’s lack of response to offers of cooperation and training, stating that without the acquisition of such systems, German soldiers would lack the necessary expertise.
The UK, France, Denmark and the US have already begun training with the Ukrainian military, while Germany has remained unresponsive to similar offers, according to Kelterborn.
