Söder Rejects New EU Taxes

Following a recently negotiated trade agreement between the United States and the European Union, Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder (CSU) has reiterated his opposition to the introduction of additional taxes at the EU level.

In a statement posted on social media on Monday, Söder expressed relief that a potentially more detrimental outcome had been averted. However, he also cautioned that the agreement presents a more challenging situation, particularly for the automotive industry.

Söder emphasized the necessity of avoiding new EU-level levies, referencing current proposals being considered. Instead, he advocated for measures that provide relief and offset the impact of increased tariffs. Specifically, he urged for a reduction in electricity prices, proposing an industrial electricity rate specifically for the chemical and automotive sectors to ease the economic burden.
