Söder Praises Klingbeil Despite Court Dispute

Despite recent difficulties surrounding the failed election for the Federal Constitutional Court, the leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU), Markus Söder, has publicly praised his working relationship with the leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), Lars Klingbeil, within the governing coalition.

In an interview with Bild, Söder commented on the positive aspects of their interactions, noting they “can talk well about football” and that Klingbeil has consistently proven to be a reliable partner. He also expressed reservations about the criticism directed towards Klingbeil concerning the postponement of electricity tax reductions, asserting it was a shared agreement and that Klingbeil is “doing a good job.

Looking ahead, Söder anticipates that the SPD will present a new candidate for the Federal Constitutional Court by the autumn. He voiced confidence in the process, suggesting that collaborative discussions throughout the summer will result in a decision that preserves the SPD’s standing.

Söder firmly ruled out potential cooperation with the Left Party, acknowledging shifting political dynamics in certain regions but emphasizing the absence of sufficient support within the German Bundestag to make such an alliance viable. He described it as “the wrong way” in the long term.

Evaluating the first ten weeks of the government led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Söder declared the period a success. He highlighted the rapid implementation of key policy changes, including a significant shift in foreign and defense policy, increased investment in the Bundeswehr (German armed forces) and a change in approach to migration driven by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt. According to Söder, these changes represent “a completely different Germany”.
