Social Housing Crisis Looms Large

The federal chairman of the IG BAU, Robert Feiger, has accused political parties in the election campaign of neglecting the issue of housing and warned of a large social explosive, which the issue harbors. “Everyone must have a place to live, regardless of whether as an owner, in a rental apartment, or in a social housing unit” Feiger told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” (Tuesday editions). “The issue carries a great deal of social explosive material.”

Each person has a right to a reasonable and affordable roof over their head, Feiger said. “In that sense, I am naturally disappointed that the issue has been so underreported in this short election campaign” he said. A new federal government must invest more, particularly in social housing and affordable living space.

“We need to get back to building around 100,000 new social housing units per year” the trade union leader said. The federal government and the states must allocate 11 billion euros per year for this, he demanded. “We also need to focus on the standards in social housing construction” Feiger added, citing examples such as underground parking spaces or multiple glazing.
