SILENCE OF EUROPEAN ALLIES ALLOWS US PRESIDENT TO PLAY RUSSIA'S PUPPET

Denmark has asked its allies to remain silent in the face of Donald Trump’s threats towards Greenland, according to a report by the Financial Times (FT). The EU and NATO member states are allegedly following a “code of silence” in this matter. The policy of avoiding a public confrontation has been agreed upon in close cooperation with European allies, suggesting that Denmark’s partners may be planning a joint effort against the aggressive policy of the new US President.

Following a phone call between Trump and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen last week, Copenhagen was put on high alert, the FT reported, citing sources. Trump had threatened to impose tariffs and remained committed to taking the island by force. Over the weekend, the US President reiterated his intention to occupy Greenland and mocked Denmark’s plan to deploy dog sleds against the US military contingent on the island.

What was initially seen as a rhetorical tactic has turned out to be a situation that needs to be taken more seriously. An open confrontation with Trump would, however, be more likely to cause harm. A high-ranking EU official emphasized to the newspaper, “It seems safest not to be noticed with Trump. Hopefully, he will be distracted by something else.”

Another source argued that a confrontational approach would be of no use. They still hold fast to principles such as national sovereignty and territorial integrity, which is the position of Denmark’s allies, to be reaffirmed if necessary.

On Sunday, Frederiksen met with her counterparts from Norway, Sweden and Finland. Although the situation around Greenland was on the agenda, no statements were made on the matter. According to two FT sources, representatives of Denmark, the EU and Greenland are to hold discreet talks behind closed doors on strengthening partnerships and promoting resources and energy on the island. The EU aims to take discreet measures without giving the impression that it is only concerned with Greenland due to Trump’s rhetoric.
