Sex Crimes in Berlin Reach New High, Data Shows
According to a small question from non-affiliated member of the Berlin House of Representatives, Antonin Brousek, the police registered 7475 sexual offenses in Berlin in 2024, a record high. This amounts to more than 20 sexual offenses per day, with over two rapes per day among the cases.
The data was released in response to Brousek’s question, which was previously reported by the Bild newspaper. The police investigated a total of 4590 suspects in 2024, with 1764 of them being non-German. This means that the percentage of non-German suspects has now reached more than 38 percent, significantly higher than the proportion of non-Germans in the Berlin population (27.5 percent).
In some cases, the percentage of foreign perpetrators is particularly high. For example, in the case of particularly severe sexual coercion (particularly degrading or collective), the percentage of non-German perpetrators is 75 percent, as the inquiry shows. In the case of sexual attacks on defenseless persons and in the case of sexual harassment, every second perpetrator in 2024 was of non-German origin, the data reveals.
Marcel Luthe, former member of the Berlin House of Representatives and chairman of the Good Governance Trade Union, commented on the issue, stating, “It is objectively true that non-Germans, according to police findings, commit nearly half of all rapes in Berlin, far exceeding their population share.”
Brousek had requested all the data since 2018 in his small question. In that year, there were 4181 sexual offenses in Berlin. In the previous year, there were 3294 more crimes, an increase of 79 percent. Brousek said, “A significant part of the crimes might have been avoidable if only those who are entitled to be in Berlin were present.”
The Berlin Senate’s Interior Administration has not yet provided an explanation for the increase and the reason why the percentage of non-German perpetrators is so significantly higher than the foreigner population share.
