Severe Storms Forecast For Southern Germany All Weekend

Meteorological authorities are currently advising vigilance across southern and southeastern Germany due to the potential for localized severe thunderstorms.

The affected areas are particularly concentrated within the regions of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Potential impacts include localized flooding of basements and roads, damage from lightning strikes and potential damage to buildings, vehicles and agricultural crops stemming from hail.

Current warnings are in effect through midnight on Sunday evening, with a low probability of extension. A warm and unstable air mass continues to dominate the weather pattern in the southeastern part of the country, fostering conditions conducive to thunderstorm development.

Between now and overnight, localized, intense thunderstorms are expected in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg with slow movement. These storms could deliver rainfall totals of 20 to 30 liters per square meter in short periods, with peak accumulations potentially exceeding 40 liters per square meter in certain areas. Localized hail up to 2 centimeters in diameter and isolated wind gusts up to 70 kilometers per hour are also possible. Throughout Saturday evening and overnight into Sunday, the thunderstorms are forecast to gradually diminish and shift further into southeastern Bavaria, with an overall reduction in the risk of severe weather.
