Serbia’s Prime Minister, Miloš Vučević, is expected to resign from his post today, according to reports from the Serbian News Agency, Tanjug. The move comes in response to the ongoing protests against the Serbian government.
Vučević is also the leader of the Serbian Progressive Party, which is affiliated with President Aleksandar Vučić.
Protests have been taking place in Serbia for weeks, sparked by the collapse of a roof at the Novi Sad train station in early November, which resulted in the deaths of 15 people. The demonstrations quickly spread across the country, with protesters demanding a full investigation into the incident. They blame the government and corruption in the country for the tragedy.
The protests are led by students, who have been joined by opposition parties. In recent days, lawmakers have blocked a major highway in a show of solidarity with the students, who claim to be independent of the country’s political parties and do not want to be co-opted.
Vučević has been in power for 12 years and the protests are also directed at him. Demonstrators believe that his Serbian Progressive Party has infiltrated the country’s institutions.
Vučević is the highest-ranking official to announce his resignation in connection with the protests, which makes new elections likely.
