In the ongoing debate about long-term financing of the pension system, Federal Minister of Labor Bärbel Bas (SPD) has received support from the trade union sector. According to the head of the IG Metall, Christiane Benner, in an interview with “Focus”, it is time for self-employed individuals and public servants to contribute to the pension fund. She believes that this would improve the revenue base.
At the same time, Benner urges the newly formed federal government to provide immediate assistance to the economy, particularly in light of the challenging situation faced by many companies, especially in the automotive industry. She points out that the situation is “dramatic” and that “tens of thousands of regular jobs” are at stake. As a Volkswagen and Continental board member, Benner emphasizes that reducing energy costs for businesses and private households should be the top priority.
Additionally, Benner strongly advocates for the promotion of electric vehicles. She believes that the “high-speed development of electric mobility” is crucial for the automotive manufacturers and suppliers to be “well-prepared for the future.” She also calls for the swift implementation of the Federal Ticket Loyalty Act, stating that it should happen “quickly.” She further asserts that “more collective agreements, good wages and safe working conditions” should be a “central concern” for the coalition.
Overall, the trade union sector is pushing for a comprehensive approach to address the challenges faced by the pension system, the economy and the automotive industry. They are emphasizing the importance of financial contributions from various sectors and the need for immediate action to ensure a stable future for businesses and workers. The focus is on reducing energy costs, promoting electric vehicles and implementing necessary legislation to strengthen collective agreements and secure working conditions. These measures are seen as crucial for the success of the automotive industry and the overall stability of the economy.
