Selen Poised to Lead German Intelligence

Sources report that Sinan Selen, current Vice President of the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Verfassungsschutz), is anticipated to become the agency’s new leader. Several media outlets, including “Table Media” have broken the story.

According to the “Handelsblatt” newspaper, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) plans to brief the Federal Office in Cologne on the impending personnel change as early as Monday. Formal confirmation by the Federal Cabinet could follow as soon as Wednesday.

Selen’s potential appointment would mark the first time a person with a recognized migration background holds a senior leadership position within German federal security agencies. Born in Istanbul in 1972, Selen is an expert in terrorism and has served as Vice President of the Verfassungsschutz since 2019, jointly with Silke Willems.

The prospective appointment has garnered positive reactions from both the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD). CDU foreign policy spokesperson Roderich Kiesewetter lauded the decision, stating that Selen possesses both exceptional expertise and extensive experience. He emphasized Selen’s long-standing experience across various aspects of state and constitutional protection, counter-terrorism and his proven ability to demonstrate strategic foresight and a comprehensive approach to hybrid threats. Kiesewetter further highlighted Selen’s character and personal qualities as vital for leading a significant security agency.

SPD foreign policy spokesperson Ralf Stegner, speaking to the “Handelsblatt” expressed that, if accurate, the decision signals the selection of a highly qualified individual to lead the Verfassungsschutz, a necessity given the current pressures on Germany’s democracy.
