A recent analysis by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reveals that the cost of numerous school supplies in Germany has been on the rise. Data released Tuesday indicates a notable increase in the price of textbooks and educational materials. In June 2025, these items saw a price surge of 3.8 percent compared to the same month in the previous year – a rate surpassing the overall consumer price inflation of 2.0 percent recorded during that period.
While certain school supplies experienced less significant price adjustments, the trend highlights a general upward pressure on educational expenses for families. Paper products, including notebooks and drawing pads, saw a comparatively modest increase of just 0.3 percent year-on-year.
Similarly, consumers faced a 1.7 percent increase for other writing and drawing materials in June 2025. This category encompasses items such as fountain pens, pencils and art sets. The data offers a snapshot of evolving costs impacting households across the nation.
