After the attack in Magdeburg, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) will advocate for more help for the affected.
“I would like the victims of this act of violence to have a better claim on state support in coping with the consequences” Scholz told the “Stern”. “So far, only victims are eligible if an event is classified as a terrorist attack – but not in the same way if it’s the act of a madman.” For the affected, that makes little difference, said Scholz: “They are suffering. We must be able to help more comprehensively in such cases as well.”
In the Christmas market ramming in Magdeburg, six people were killed and around 300 were injured. The perpetrator, a Saudi Arabian man working as a doctor, had previously drawn attention to himself as a troublemaker on multiple occasions.
