Former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) plans to focus on his own electoral district after his term as Chancellor ends and he does not rule out the possibility of taking on boardroom positions. Scholz will “exercise his Bundestag mandate in the 21st German Bundestag” said Government Spokesman Steffen Hebestreit in an interview with the “Tagesspiegel” (Friday edition). Scholz has always been committed to “intensive constituency work with regular citizen talks” and he intends to maintain this focus. Scholz successfully defended his direct mandate in Potsdam during the February Bundestag election, where he was the SPD’s Chancellor candidate.
Unlike former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD), Scholz does not aim for positions in companies. “Olaf Scholz has always made it clear that it was the greatest honor of his life to be the ninth Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany – insofar, he does not seek mandates in supervisory boards, etc.” Hebestreit told the “Tagesspiegel.” Scholz does not intend to return to his profession as a lawyer for the time being. “His legal work has been put on hold since he entered the German Bundestag in 1998 and there are no plans for any changes in the foreseeable future” said Hebestreit.
Regarding the guest list and music selection for the traditional “Große Zapfenstreich” ceremony on Monday evening, the Government Spokesman did not comment. “We will inform you in due course” said Hebestreit. When asked about any vacation plans for the outgoing Chancellor, he said: “There are no concrete plans at this time.
