Scholz Backs Climate-Friendly Steel

In the debate over the future of CO2-free steel production with green hydrogen, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has openly endorsed the so-called “green steel”.

“If we want to ensure that steel plays a central role in Germany in the future, we must help the companies to produce steel that is CO2-neutral” the Chancellor said on Wednesday afternoon during a visit to the DGB Federal Executive Committee meeting. Therefore, a clear commitment once again: “Steel is something that will play a central role in Germany’s industrial development in the next decades – I even want to say, in the next centuries.”

“It is recyclable, it is something we need, where we in Germany have high competencies.” In his view, it is also of geostrategic importance to control the steel processing and production in Germany. “That’s why it’s right that we, if the companies are on this path, also support them” said Scholz.
