A political scandal is unfolding in Germany, with a former health minister and current Union faction leader, Jens Spahn, at the center of the controversy. Christian Görke, the parliamentary business manager of the Left faction, has called for the publication of an internal report on the mask procurement contract awarded during Spahn’s tenure as health minister.
Görke, in an interview with the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” described the situation as “politically unbelievable.” He accused Spahn of engaging in “free and uncontrolled” procurement of masks, resulting in a massive overspending of 6 billion euros and further alleged that Spahn’s influence may have been used to manipulate the process. “It doesn’t just smell bad, it stinks terribly” Görke said. “Spahn’s dirty business is a case not just for parliament, but for the public prosecutor’s office.”
Görke believes that the report was “concealed” by Health Minister Karl Lauterbach out of consideration for the coalition negotiations with the Union. He appealed to the new Health Minister, Nina Warken, to publish the report “immediately and unedited.” The Left faction’s parliamentary business manager emphasized that the public has a right to know how their tax money is being spent and that a parliamentary inquiry may be necessary to uncover the truth about the damage allegedly caused by Spahn during his time in office.
