EU Lifts Economic Sanctions on Syria, Maintains Security Restrictions
In a significant move, the European Union’s foreign ministers have decided to lift all economic sanctions against Syria, except for those related to national security, the chemical weapons program and the Assad regime’s inner circle.
The decision, announced by the German government, marks a new beginning for the EU and Syria, said German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. “We are giving the Syrian government a chance, but we also expect an inclusive policy within the country, involving all population and religious groups” he added. “Syria has always been a diverse country and it’s essential for us that a united Syria can take control of its future.”
German Development Minister Reem Alabali-Radovan saw the decision as a moment of hope and a new start for Syria. “For a successful and peaceful new beginning in Syria, it’s crucial that the economy takes off and people can provide for their basic needs. The lifting of sanctions strengthens the self-help forces of Syrian society” she said.
While the lifting of sanctions is a crucial step, strong international support is also necessary for a successful new start, the minister emphasized. “Germany will make its contribution, not just the federal government, but also many people with Syrian roots, from doctors to entrepreneurs, who will bring in their expertise or invest in the country.
