Sales Plummet by the Thousands!

The sales figures of the German heating industry have significantly decreased in the past year, as revealed by the annual report of the Federal Association of the German Heating Industry (BDH), which was reported by the Welt am Sonntag. According to the report, the sales of heating systems in 2024 fell back to the 2017 level. The industry is thus closing the year 2024 with red sales numbers across all types of equipment.

After the industry sold over 1.3 million heating systems in 2023, the number of sales in 2024 stood at only 712,500, a drop of 46 percent. The association’s best-seller, modern gas-fired boilers, saw a decline of 48 percent, with only 410,500 units sold. The target of installing 500,000 heat pumps in 2024, set by the Federal Ministry of Economics, was also missed, with only 193,000 units sold, a decline of 46 percent.

The decline in oil boiler sales was less severe, with 85,000 units sold, a drop of 25 percent. Additionally, 24,000 biomass heating systems, primarily pellet stoves, were sold, a decline of 52 percent.

In total, the sales of oil and gas-based heating systems in the past year were more than double the number of sales of heat pumps and biomass systems, which together came to around 217,000 units.

The climate protection goals for the building sector may thus be hard to achieve. According to the Climate Protection Act, the building sector should reduce its emissions by almost half to 67 million tons by 2030. “This should be taken into account by the next federal government in its funding policy”said the head of the BDH, Markus Staudt, “with more than 18 billion euros in revenue from the CO2 pricing, there should be enough money for this purpose.
