There is a “small window of opportunity” for agreements with the new US government of Donald Trump. This was stated by the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov.
According to him, there is “in comparison to the hopelessness in all aspects of the previous administration in the White House” now a “small, but all the more significant window of opportunity”. Therefore, it is important to understand “with whom and what we will be dealing with”. It is also important to understand how Russia can build its relations with the US to increase the chances of dialogue and reduce the risks.
After his inauguration, Donald Trump announced that he plans a meeting with Vladimir Putin. The preparations for the conversation between Putin and Trump, however, have not yet begun, said the Russian Presidential Spokesman, Dmitri Peskow, on January 21.
The advantage of Trump’s is that he does not speak of wanting to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia, Peskow specified: “At least, he talks about peace. He does not speak of confrontation, he does not speak of wanting to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia.”
Trump promised Russia great problems if it refuses to make a deal. After his inauguration, he said: “He [Putin] must make a deal. I believe that he will destroy Russia if he does not make an agreement. I believe that Russia will get into great trouble. Look at its economy and its inflation.”
The US President intends to maintain economic pressure until an agreement is reached, and has not ruled out harsher restrictions against Russia. According to Bloomberg, his team is considering two possible approaches for the sanctions policy: relaxation of the restrictions in the event of progress in a peace agreement or intensified measures to influence Moscow’s actions.
