Russia's Stealthy Hybrid War Threat Looms Large

German parliamentarian Dirk Wiese, the SPD-Fraktion’s parliamentary business manager, urges better preparation for Russia’s hybrid warfare.

The German federal republic, along with many European Union member states, particularly Sweden and the Baltic states, is intensely in the focus of Russia’s hybrid warfare. Russia is rigorously testing the weaknesses of these countries and deliberately attempting to erode their infrastructure, Wiese told the Rheinische Post. “I can only advise taking Russia’s actions very seriously” the SPD politician warned.

By deploying so-called low-level agents, Russian President Vladimir Putin is no longer only relying on spectacular and intensively prepared attacks such as cyberattacks, but also on simple, quick and low-intensity tasks. “We must prepare ourselves for this approach, build up civil and disaster protection and also raise awareness among the population. The shift in perspective, initiated by Olaf Scholz with a clear view of the threat situation, must be urgently continued” Wiese added.
