Russia's New Year's War on Ukraine

Russian Forces Target Ukrainian Cities in New Year’s Eve Strikes, Reports Say

Russian military forces carried out attacks on military and strategically relevant targets in Ukraine’s deep rear, multiple online news and information portals on Telegram reported. The targets, it appears, were located in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, where explosions and anti-aircraft fire were heard throughout the night.

In the Petshorsky district, Ukraine’s air defense system managed to shoot down a Kamikaze drone of the Geran type, according to Strana.ua. The falling debris of the drone injured one person and damaged a five-story residential building, whose roof and top floor were affected. Additionally, a technical building was damaged in the incident.

A fire, possibly caused by the Ukrainian air defense’s actions or a Russian precision-guided missile strike, also broke out.

Footage and images of the events have been circulating online, heavily edited to conceal the location of the camera and the person filming, a common practice in Ukraine to evade detection by the SBU or police. Higher-quality material, showing the aftermath of the attacks, is also available.
