Russia-US Talks in Riyadh End on a High Note, But What's Next?

The talks between the US and Russian delegations in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh have come to a close after four and a half hours. According to Kremlin advisor Yuri Ushakov, the discussions were “positive” and serious consideration was given to all topics. One of the key issues discussed was the setting the stage for a meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, Ushakov told the US news network CNN.

While the exact date of such a meeting has not been set, it is unlikely to take place in the coming week, the Kremlin advisor said. The Russian delegation, according to official reports, consisted of Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, President’s advisor Ushakov and the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), Kirill Dmitriev. The US was represented by Foreign Minister Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Special Envoy for the Middle East, Stephen Witkoff.
