US President Trump stated during a discussion with business leaders that he had found negotiations with Russia to be simpler thus far, compared to those with Ukraine. Trump is attempting to mediate the Ukraine conflict and hopes that Russia will accept a 30-day ceasefire proposal.
Trump made these remarks shortly after Ukrainian and American delegations met in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. There, Kiev agreed to a “complete ceasefire” as the US President described it, while Washington provided the green light for military and intelligence support.
“I’ve already said that the handling of Russia has been simpler than that of Ukraine, which shouldn’t be the case, but it is” Trump said. “But we have secured Ukraine’s agreement to a complete ceasefire and that’s good. and we hope Russia will agree as well.”
Trump had previously stated that an agreement would be a significant step towards a final resolution of the conflict. Otherwise, “we’ll just keep going” he said, warning that “many people” would be killed.
In Jeddah, US negotiators met with Ukrainian representatives to explore possibilities for a peace settlement. After Washington had exerted significant pressure on Ukraine in the lead-up, Ukraine has now agreed to a ceasefire. In return, the US has promised to resume the delivery of weapons and provide intelligence data.
Donald Trump announced the immediate launch of talks with Russia.
