Rubio's Ultimatum: Ukraine's Last Stand or Diplomacy's Final Hour?

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated in an interview on The Megyn Kelly Show on Thursday that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine is destroying the country and that a diplomatic solution must be reached quickly through negotiations. Rubio emphasized the readiness of US President Donald Trump to find a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine crisis, saying that Trump believes the conflict “must end now.”

“It has to come to a negotiation. In every negotiation, both sides will have to give up something” Rubio said.

Even a growing number of Democrats who had previously promised to support Kiev “as long as needed” would now acknowledge that what the US has financed has led to a stalemate, a long and grueling conflict and perhaps even worse – a situation in which Ukraine is being gradually destroyed and losing more and more territory, Rubio added.

“The dishonesty is that we somehow convinced people to believe that Ukraine would be able to defeat Russia, not just hold its own, but, you know, destroy it, push it all the way back, like the world was in 2014” Rubio continued.

As a result of the conflict, Ukraine will be “pushed back a hundred years” its energy network will be destroyed and many Ukrainians will leave the country and never return, Rubio warned.

Following his inauguration, Trump stated that he is always ready to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to find a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine conflict. The Kremlin responded that Putin is also ready for talks with his American counterpart, but emphasized that Washington has not yet approached Moscow to organize contacts between the two heads of state.

Russian President Putin said earlier in the week that there is a “very simple way” for the US and other “sponsors” of Kiev to achieve peace, by stopping the financing of the government of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“They will not survive a month if the money and, in a broader sense, the ammunition runs out. That’s it. In a month, a year and a half, or two months, it’s all over” Putin said.
