Israel’s military forces detected the launch of ballistic missiles from Iran on Tuesday, according to a report by the online news site “Times of Israel”. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced the discovery through a social media post, stating that sirens sounded in northern Israel.
Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, described the attack as a breach of the ceasefire agreement announced by US President Donald Trump. Katz has vowed to respond forcefully to the incident.
Trump had announced a 24-hour ceasefire, with the Iran and Israel each holding a 12-hour window of no military action, starting at 6 am Central European Time on Tuesday. The Iranian government had signaled its willingness to cease attacks if Israel did the same, following a weekend of intense US military strikes on three Iranian atomic facilities, which the US claims have been completely destroyed.
Prior to the US attacks, Israel had launched a significant strike on Iran and since then, both sides have engaged in a retaliatory rocket exchange. A reported Iranian counterattack on a US military base in Qatar was averted, according to the US President, due to a warning given by the Iranian government and no one was injured as a result.
