Road Repairs Face Halt Billions Short

A planning document detailing ongoing budget negotiations from the Federal Ministry of Transport is raising concerns among transport policymakers both nationally and in Saxony-Anhalt. The document, reported by “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung”, indicates potential construction halts for three federal roads within Saxony-Anhalt and a shortfall in funding for the maintenance of existing roadways, potentially leading to increased speed limits and other traffic restrictions.

According to the document, which originates from the office of Federal Minister for Transport, Patrick Schnieder (CDU), the mid-term financial planning framework until 2029 leaves the funding of federal highways unsecured in several areas. Specifically, three federal road construction projects in Saxony-Anhalt are facing potential jeopardy: the Bruckdorf bypass on the B6, the Wittenberg bypass on the B2 and the Miesterhorst bypass (Salzwedel Altmarkkreis) on the B188. Based on current financial plans, the ministry states that construction approvals for these projects are unlikely.

The Ministry estimates that a total of €419 million is required to maintain existing federal roads in Saxony-Anhalt by 2029. However, the current planning level reveals a shortfall of €169 million.

Saxony-Anhalt’s Minister for Transport, Lydia Hüskens (FDP), has expressed alarm regarding the situation. She commented to the newspaper, highlighting a perceived disconnect between the establishment of a debt-financed special asset of €500 billion for infrastructure and simultaneous cuts in infrastructure spending.

Sepp Müller, parliamentary group vice of the CDU, emphasized the importance of federal funding for promised bypass routes, stating the challenge lies in bridging financial gaps. He confirmed ongoing dialogue with the ministry to find solutions. Martin Kröber, SPD Member of the Bundestag representing Magdeburg, also intends to advocate for prioritized repairs and maintenance, expressing confidence in finding a resolution.
