Revitalizing Social Democracy Requires Bold Ideas and Political Backbone

Philipp Türmer, the head of the Juso, expects new ideas from the SPD leadership to find a way out of the crisis. “Renewing social democracy is not an easy task” said Juso head Philipp Türmer to the “Spiegel”. For this, it requires backbone, perseverance and a clear political compass. Members and voters who have lost trust in the SPD must be involved to regain credibility, said Türmer. “This task will be much more difficult if party chairpersons are also part of the federal cabinet.”

That is why it is crucial to develop a plan on how to programmatic reorientation can succeed and how it can be ensured that the profile of the SPD as a party, in addition to government work, is recognizable. “I am very interested to see the ideas on how this can be achieved” said Türmer.

Sebastian Roloff, a member of the party board, warned that successful government work must not neglect the “processing of the election results and the situation of the SPD, as well as a social democratic profile.” Roloff and Türmer are considered as left-wing figures in the party, just like the newly appointed party chairperson Bärbel Bas and the new general secretary Tim Klüssendorf.
