Germany’s retail sector is bracing for a potentially bleak Christmas shopping season, according to a new survey from the Ifo Institute, raising concerns about the broader economic outlook and highlighting the pressures facing consumer spending. The poll reveals a pervasive sense of pessimism among retailers, with approximately 25% anticipating a poor performance during the crucial holiday period – traditionally the most important sales phase of the year.
“Retailer expectations are subdued” stated Klaus Wohlrabe, head of Ifo surveys, emphasizing the lack of optimism entering this critical period. While nearly half of businesses predict a merely average showing, only a scant 10% are daring to hope for a positive outcome.
The gloom is particularly sharp when compared to the previous year. A staggering 42.2% of retailers forecast a significantly weaker year-end push compared to 2023, while 35% expect sales to remain flat. Only 7% believe a year-on-year improvement is likely, underlining a worrying trend.
A sector-by-sector breakdown paints a consistently downbeat picture, with one notable exception: independent bookstores are demonstrating a more optimistic outlook. Conversely, toy retailers – usually a cornerstone of pre-Christmas sales – are experiencing heightened pessimism, with approximately half expecting demonstrably weaker results. This decline in toy sales, a traditionally reliable segment, suggests a possible shift in consumer priorities and disposable income levels.
Analysts suggest the pessimism reflects ongoing macroeconomic headwinds, including persistent inflation, high interest rates and waning consumer confidence. This subdued outlook for the Christmas season could further dampen economic growth projections for Germany, raising questions about the government’s ability to stimulate consumer spending and maintain stability. The divergent sentiment in the book sector, however, offers a flicker of hope, potentially indicating a continued demand for cultural experiences even amidst economic anxieties. The situation warrants close monitoring, particularly regarding potential government intervention to support struggling retail businesses.
