Red Cross Urges Changes to National Service Plan

The German Red Cross is urging revisions to the newly proposed national service model, expressing concern over a lack of provisions for social service options within the initial communication to potential participants

Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, President of the German Red Cross, Gerda Hasselfeldt, stated her regret that the current cabinet decision contains no mention of social service opportunities in the introductory letter sent to young people She highlighted a willingness among many to contribute to society, but noted a significant gap in readily available information regarding how to do so effectively Hasselfeldt suggested that the initial communication, coupled with a dedicated advisory service provided by relevant organizations, could readily address this issue

Within the framework of the proposed national service legislation, Hasselfeldt emphasized the opportunity for the federal government to strengthen voluntary civic engagement She argued that increasing societal involvement is becoming increasingly vital, particularly considering demographic trends She further indicated that, should mandatory service be introduced at a later date, existing structures built upon voluntary engagement could be leveraged

The proposed model, scheduled to begin next year, will involve all young men and women receiving a questionnaire upon turning 18 Completion of the questionnaire will be mandatory for men and will gauge their interest in serving in the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) Hasselfeldt expressed hope that the federal government will revisit the legislation to further incorporate and prioritize opportunities for societal contribution
