Record-High 287 Drunk Driving Accidents in Germany

According to preliminary results, a record number of alcohol-related accidents occurred on Christi Himmelfahrt, also known as Father’s Day, in Germany. In 2024, a total of 287 road traffic accidents involved alcohol, reported the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Tuesday. This marks the highest number of alcohol-related accidents on a single day of the year.

For comparison, the average number of accidents with at least one person under the influence of alcohol in Germany in 2024 was around 95 per day. In total, there were approximately 34,700 accidents involving alcohol in the past year.

On Christi Himmelfahrt, 204 of the 287 alcohol-related accidents resulted in harm to people, a new annual high. Of these, 58 individuals were seriously injured and one person lost their life.

Compared to the previous year, the number of alcohol-related accidents decreased, with 340 incidents in 2023. In 2022, there were also a higher number of incidents, with 319 reported on Christi Himmelfahrt. Since many years, this day has consistently seen the most alcohol-related accidents in a year. Other days with a regularly above-average number of accidents involving alcohol are New Year’s Day and Labour Day on May 1.
