Ralf Stegner's Warning Shot

German politician Ralf Stegner, a member of the SPD’s foreign affairs committee, has spoken out against using foreign and security policy in the SPD’s election campaign to gain ground in the polls. “Foreign and security policy is not a suitable subject for electoral considerations, and for the SPD, peace policy is not a tactical question but a fundamental conviction” Stegner told the “Rheinische Post” (Monday edition).

Looking at Chancellor and SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz, Stegner said: “In this sense, the internationally experienced and measured acting Chancellor will, regardless of the Bundestag election campaign, remain so in his wise Ukraine policy.” He is certain that this will convince the voters “all the more so, if they take a closer look at the challenger Friedrich Merz”, Stegner said.
