Rail Chief Lowers German Train Punctuality Goals

The Federal Minister for Transport, Patrick Schnieder, has adjusted the punctuality targets for long-distance rail services operated by Deutsche Bahn. Addressing reporters in Berlin on Monday, Minister Schnieder stated that his benchmark for success involves achieving a clear upward trend, with a punctuality rate of at least 70 percent for long-distance travel by 2029.

This revised target represents a scaling back from previous ambitions. Deutsche Bahn itself had initially aimed to reach a 70 percent punctuality rate as early as next year.

Looking toward the medium term, the ministry envisions reaching 80 percent, with a long-term goal of 90 percent punctuality. Schnieder emphasized the significant undertaking involved, describing it as “a very, very long road” while stressing the importance of maintaining this as the ultimate measure of progress for the national rail operator.
