A leadership transition is underway at Deutsche Bahn, Germany’s national railway company. Following discussions in Berlin on Thursday, Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder announced that both structural and personnel changes are anticipated within the organization.
An agreement has been reached to prematurely conclude the contract of current CEO Richard Lutz, which was previously set to run until 2027. Mr. Lutz, who has led the company since 2017, will remain in his position until a successor is appointed.
Minister Schnieder expressed his gratitude for Mr. Lutz’s dedication, particularly during challenging periods for the railway. “I am confident that he will continue to dedicate himself fully to the rail sector in the coming weeks” he stated.
Werner Gatzer, Chairman of the Supervisory Board, acknowledged Mr. Lutz’s contributions over many years, expressing sincere thanks for his leadership and commitment. He confirmed the commencement of a selection process to identify a new CEO and prepare corresponding resolutions for the Supervisory Board.
Minister Schnieder is scheduled to present his “Agenda for Satisfied Customers on the Rails” on September 22nd. He emphasized the importance of establishing a strategic framework before addressing personnel matters. “Our concept is largely defined and now we need to find the right individual to implement it” he said, adding that thoroughness and diligence will be prioritized over speed in the selection process. The Minister anticipates being able to present a new CEO on September 22nd, with the key criterion being the candidate’s ability to execute the established strategy.
