Moscow and Washington’s talks in Saudi Arabia, described by Kremlin Spokesman Dmitri Peskov as the first step towards restoring relations between the two nations, have not yet yielded definitive conclusions, according to the Russian News Agency RIA Nowosti. The talks, Peskov emphasized, are also crucial in resolving the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
“It’s not possible to achieve everything in one day or a week” Peskov said. “There is still a long way ahead of us. Yesterday, we made the first, but very important, step.”
The relations between the two nations, Peskov pointed out, are in a deplorable state and were deliberately damaged by the previous US administration. They need to be “revived” and then “restored.” Diplomats will now work on the basis of the agreements reached to restore the relations between the two nations, Peskov added.
When asked if a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump might take place before the end of February, Peskov replied, “Maybe, maybe not.”
Just a week ago, the Russian and US presidents had a phone call, discussing the Ukraine, among other topics. Putin had previously stated that the goal was not a short ceasefire, but a long-term peace. Trump, in turn, said that Volodymyr Zelenskyy was ready to sign an agreement to settle the conflict, without specifying the conditions.
The talks in Riyadh aimed to strengthen diplomatic relations and explore ways to end the war in Ukraine. The Russian and US delegations announced positive outcomes after the meeting, citing a shared understanding of solving common problems and the preparation of further meetings.
