'Procedure Would Be Difficult and Politically Dangerous'

Carsten Linnemann, the General Secretary of the CDU, opposes the initiation of a ban against the AfD. He told “Welt am Sonntag” that all reputable legal experts believe that such a process would be extremely challenging under current circumstances and the outcome uncertain. Politically, he argues, it would be highly risky. Initiating a ban would take a long time, during which the AfD could fully exploit its perceived victimhood narrative. Moreover, Linnemann emphasizes that even if the AfD were to be banned, it would not address the concerns of its ten million frustrated voters. He believes that frustration cannot be prohibited, but only resolved through good politics.
