Populism on the Brink of a Catastrophic Comeback?

In a stern warning, Free Democratic Party (FDP) faction leader Christian Dürr cautioned that the rise of right-wing populism could intensify if the next German government fails to implement the necessary reforms and changes. “If we, as politics – as parliament, as government – don’t deliver, then we’re threatened with the same situations we see in the US or in Austria in 2029, at the next federal election” Dürr told the news portal T-Online. “Nobody wants that.”

Looking ahead to the upcoming federal election, Dürr stated, “We’re negotiating the prosperity of our country.” He emphasized that the key issue is who will govern Germany in the coming years. In this context, Dürr advocated for a coalition between the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Christian Social Union (CSU), the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Liberal Party (FDP). As FDP leader Christian Lindner has already suggested, Dürr also ruled out the possibility of an FDP-Grüne coalition.

“In economic policy, my impression is that the Greens are stuck in the 1980s” Dürr said. “The posters may appear modern, but the concepts date back to the past. Subsidies, state funds and debt brakes relaxed – we risk missing the future if we do that.” He further stated, “Whether in economic policy or in migration issues – with the Greens, this country is standing still. I don’t believe it’s good for Germany if the Greens are involved in a future federal government.
