Police Union Urges Improved Data Sharing

Germany’s police union, GdP, has urged improved inter-agency data sharing as the government prepares to approve the establishment of a National Security Council (NSR).

GdP Federal Chairman Jochen Kopelke affirmed the union’s support for the federal government’s NSR plans in comments to the “Rheinische Post” newspaper. However, he emphasized that the council’s effectiveness would be contingent upon the creation of jointly developed, up-to-date and cross-agency situational assessments to provide a solid foundation for strategic and operational decisions.

Kopelke stated that the integration of internal and external security through a future NSR is essential for maintaining democracy and a free society. He stressed the importance of adhering to constitutional principles, cautioning that the NSR must not be perceived as a centralized enforcement authority. Existing jurisdictional and intervention structures of state and federal agencies should not be compromised, he added.
