Police and Firefighters Under Attack Again

On Silvester night, there were numerous attacks on police and rescue services again.

According to Florian Nath from the Berlin Police, there were up to 330 arrests in connection with the Silvester deployment in the capital city by three o’clock in the early morning of New Year’s Day. The emergency responders were “numerous” times hit with pyrotechnics, and in one case, a police officer was seriously injured and had to be operated on in a hospital. A special “blood-clotting device” had to be used beforehand. The police officer was attacked by a group of people.

The Hamburg Police brought in additional emergency responders, particularly in the Steindamm (St. Georg) and Schreyerring (Steilshoop) areas, as there were earlier incidents of throwing pyrotechnic objects at police officers. According to the officers, the situation was, however, calmed by the police measures.
