German-Poland Relations Remain Crucial, German Official Says
The German government’s commissioner for Poland, Knut Abraham, has cautioned against excessive pessimism in the wake of Poland’s presidential election, in which a conservative lawyer, Karol Nawrocki, secured a victory. Abraham, a member of the Christian Democratic Union, emphasized that the new Polish president will not deviate from the country’s fundamental coordinates, including its membership in the European Union, NATO and support for Ukraine.
“We should not be deterred” Abraham told the Rheinische Post in an interview. “The new Polish president will maintain the country’s key positions and we should not be swayed by any changes in tone or style.” Abraham acknowledged that the new president may adopt a more robust and discordant tone, but stressed that Poland’s central role in Europe remains unchanged.
The commissioner advised German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to continue his current course, emphasizing the importance of active cooperation. “The chancellor has already set the right accents and he has demonstrated a clear understanding of Poland’s new role, which he welcomes” Abraham said. Merz’s recent visits to Paris and Warsaw, where he addressed complex issues, were a testament to his awareness of the significance of the German-Polish relationship, Abraham added.
