Pistorius Blasts Opposition on Military Draft Delay

The planned parliamentary debate on the proposed new conscription law has been met with contention, prompting a sharp rebuke from Defence Minister Boris Pistorius. The debate, initially slated for next week, has been postponed by the opposition Union faction, a move Pistorius has characterized as “careless” and potentially delaying the introduction of the new conscription system and the recommencement of mandatory registration.

According to Pistorius, the Union’s request for specific, quantifiable data outlining the point at which voluntary service would be deemed insufficient reflects a contradiction in their approach. Several prominent Union politicians, including parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn, have cited recent incursions into NATO airspace by Russian drones and aircraft, alongside projections suggesting a potential Russian capacity to attack a NATO member state by 2029, as justification for their demands.

Pistorius questioned the rationale behind linking airspace violations to the conscription law, stating that the connection remains unclear. He underscored that the parliamentary process provides multiple avenues for introducing alternative perspectives – including amendments and expert hearings – ensuring thorough consideration of all viewpoints.

The Defence Minister expressed concern that the Union’s actions are damaging the government’s reputation rather than fostering trust. He urged the Union faction to adhere to the planned schedule and engage in the parliamentary process constructively. The postponement has raised questions about the timeline for implementing the new conscription system and the broader implications for Germany’s security preparedness.
