Government salaries for the Federal President, Federal Chancellor and Federal Ministers are set to increase by a combined 5.8 percent, according to information released by the Federal Interior Ministry.
The salary adjustments will be implemented in two stages. A 3 percent rise will take effect retroactively to April 1st, followed by a further 2.8 percent increase planned for May 2026.
These adjustments are a consequence of recent collective bargaining agreements reached within the public sector, encompassing both federal and municipal employees. Employers and trade unions finalized the wage increases in April.
As a result of these agreements, the monthly salary for Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will rise by a total of €1,350, bringing his remuneration to approximately €24,300. Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) will see an increase of €1,220, bringing his monthly salary to roughly €21,900. The salaries of Federal Ministers are also set to increase by €980, to approximately €17,600 per month.
