Party Defends Judge Pick Fight Looms

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) remains steadfast in its nomination of Professor Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf for a position as a judge on the Federal Constitutional Court, according to SPD parliamentary group vice chair Sonja Eichwede. She confirmed plans for a personal presentation of the candidate to the parliamentary group of the CDU/CSU factions.

Speaking to “Welt” television on Saturday, Eichwede emphasized the party’s conviction that Brosius-Gersdorf is a highly qualified academic who would be capable of contributing effectively to the court in Karlsruhe. She addressed concerns surrounding the candidate, stating that what she perceived as misrepresentations of her views have been circulating, highlighting the importance of respectful dialogue within a democratic system.

The SPD plans to facilitate a meeting between Brosius-Gersdorf and members of the CDU/CSU factions, a move designed to directly address lingering doubts and provide an opportunity for the candidate to present her qualifications. Eichwede suggested this direct engagement would be beneficial in clarifying perceptions and fostering understanding.

While the proposed meeting has been presented, a specific date has not yet been finalized. Eichwede indicated that the invitation to the candidate to present herself is difficult to decline, particularly given the importance of open communication and the addressing of concerns within a democratic process. She suggested that such a meeting would also serve the interests of the CDU/CSU, who are understood to support the nomination despite some internal reservations.
